The Feltmakers and their guests were most definitely lazing on a sunny afternoon at Henley but not so Dan Knowles, CEO of our charity partner, Brain Tumour Research (BTR). An accomplished rower, Dan, who is a member of the Leander Club and has represented Oxford University and London Rowing Club at Henley Regatta, took Feltmakers and their guests on the Thames in a traditional 120-year-old rowing skiff which was a wonderful way to see the racing from the water.

The Feltmakers and BTR pitched up in the picturesque gardens of Old Blades Cottage, situated approximately half-way along the rowing course, so it serves as an ideal location because by the time the races get to the enclosures, most have either been won or lost!

Throughout the afternoon, we were plied with a seemingly never-ending and effortlessly prepared buffet-style picnic by Lucy Wood, wife of Third Warden, Simon.

Former Lord Mayor of London, Sir David Wootton, who serves as a Steward of Henley Royal Regatta and is also a member of Leander and London Rowing Clubs, gave us an engaging and informative talk about the history of Henley Regatta.
While at Jesus College, Cambridge, Sir David captained his College’s boat in 1972 and rowed in the First Boat which swept the board against all comers. Until he became Lord Mayor of London in 2011/12, he endeavoured to row there once a year with his contemporaries.
He explained that Henley Regatta was first held in 1839 and has been held annually ever since, with the exception of the years affected by the two World Wars and the COVID-19 pandemic. Originally staged by the Mayor and people of Henley as a public attraction with a fair and other amusements, the emphasis rapidly changed so that competitive amateur rowing became its main purpose. The course traverses two counties – Berkshire (towpath) side of the river and viewing opportunities on the Buckinghamshire side of the river.
In 1851, HRH Prince Albert became the Regatta’s first Royal Patron and since his death, the reigning Monarch has always consented to become Patron. This patronage means the Regatta can be called Henley Royal Regatta.
A truly delightful day, from start to finish and grateful thanks not only to Dan and Lucy but also fellow Feltmakers, Simon Wood, Sarah McGrath, Victoria Carson and Charlie Allesbrook (BTR).
